#LewisChoice: Charlie Arrindell’s Unexpected Journey to Leadership

When Charlie Arrindell first stepped into the world of utility vegetation management, he had no idea what he was in for. Unlike many of his peers, Charlie came to Lewis as his very first experience in the industry. With a background that spanned advertising research and even sports memorabilia manufacturing, his entry into the field was both unplanned and transformative. His experience there gave him the opportunity to participate in projects at iconic venues like Yankee Stadium and Citi Field and even led him overseas. However, when that company eventually folded, Charlie found himself at a crossroads until a friend mentioned an opportunity at Lewis. Intrigued yet hesitant - after all, he had never seen tree trimming near power lines or even considered vegetation management - Charlie took a leap of faith.

From his very first day at Lewis, the unexpected turned into a revelation. "I never thought I'd love cutting trees and working outdoors," Charlie admits, reflecting on his initial reservations. Yet, he quickly discovered that the work was not only challenging but also deeply rewarding. Despite the tough physical labor - whether battling freezing mornings or sweltering heat - he never once dreaded heading to work. Instead, Charlie found joy in the camaraderie of his team and the unique opportunity to lead and grow in an environment that truly valued him.

Starting as a groundsperson, he absorbed every facet of the business—from transmission work in the woods to hazard tree removals near distribution lines. This comprehensive exposure laid the foundation for his advancement. Through dedication and a passion for learning, Charlie earned his stripes, eventually moving up to Supervisor, the position he now holds.

In 2023, Charlie was selected to participate in Lewis’ Emerging Leaders program. When he was nominated to join, it wasn’t just an acknowledgment of his hard work - it was an investment in his potential. "When I was chosen for the program, I was surprised and humbled," he recalls. He appreciates that Lewis not only provides opportunities for advancement but also fosters an environment where every voice is heard. Unlike many companies where ideas can get lost in layers of bureaucracy, at Lewis, the journey from a suggestion to real change is remarkably short. "It’s a large company that still feels very small—your ideas really do matter," Charlie emphasizes. “It’s not unheard of to have an idea in the field one day, and then have it in front of Leslie (CEO Leslie Kass) the next day.”

Another element that has deeply influenced Charlie’s perspective is Lewis’ employee ownership model. Transitioning from union work to becoming an employee owner through the Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP), he quickly realized that his success was intertwined with that of his colleagues. "Being an employee owner means more than just a pretty paycheck at retirement," Charlie explains. It instills a sense of responsibility—not just for personal gain but for the collective well-being of everyone at Lewis. “We’re all pulling on the rope together. I am really striving to make this place better, not just for myself, but for everyone that works here.”

For Charlie, the choice to stay at Lewis for 12+ years is clear. Beyond the competitive benefits and job stability, it’s the culture that truly sets the company apart. "The culture here is second to none," he says. “Whether it’s the robust leadership development programs, the genuine care for employee voices, or the mutual respect that flows from the top down, Lewis is a place of endless possibilities - a place where leadership is not just taught but, lived every day.”

Charlie Arrindell’s journey is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the path you never expected can lead to the most rewarding destination. And his experience is a testament to why working at Lewis isn’t just a job - it’s a place where you can find fulfillment and make a difference – every day. Just ask Charlie.
